Sparkling water systems CO2: installation and maintenance

Sparkling water systems and CO2 kits: carbonators, cylinders, regulators and maintenance

Sparkling water systems are used to produce carbonated water by adding food-grade CO2 in a controlled way. They can be installed on water dispensers, under-counter systems, dispensing towers and professional systems for bars, restaurants, offices, canteens and Ho.Re.Ca. environments.

How a sparkling water system works

Water and CO2 mixing
The carbonator mixes water with food-grade carbon dioxide. Carbonation quality depends on CO2 pressure, water temperature, flow rate, carbonator type and system adjustment.
Cold water and carbonation
Cold water absorbs CO2 more effectively. For this reason, sparkling water systems are often combined with water dispensers or systems that chill water before carbonation.
Pressure regulator
The pressure regulator controls CO2 pressure coming from the cylinder. Incorrect pressure can cause poor carbonation, excessive foam or irregular operation.

Main components

Carbonator
The carbonator is the component where water and CO2 are mixed. It must be selected according to required flow rate, system type and intended use.
CO2 cylinder
The cylinder supplies food-grade carbon dioxide to the system. It may be disposable or refillable, depending on installation type, required autonomy and regulator compatibility.
Valves, tubes and fittings
Tubes, fittings, check valves and accessories must be suitable for water and CO2, pressure-resistant and compatible with the system.
Faucet or dispensing tower
Sparkling water can be dispensed through dedicated faucets, countertop towers, push buttons or multi-way systems for room-temperature, cold, sparkling or filtered water.

What to check before choosing

Required flow rate
The sparkling water system must be sized according to the amount of sparkling water required, the number of users and the type of service: home, office, bar, restaurant or professional use.
Water and CO2 pressure
Water pressure, CO2 pressure, temperature and settings must be consistent. Incorrect values can reduce carbonation quality or create dispensing problems.
Component compatibility
Before installation, check compatibility among cylinder, pressure regulator, fittings, tubes, valves, carbonator, water dispenser and faucet or dispensing tower.

CO2 system maintenance

Cylinder check
Periodically check the CO2 cylinder level, correct opening, connection seal and pressure setting on the regulator.
Leak check
Fittings, tubes, valves and connections should be checked to avoid CO2 or water leaks. A leak can reduce autonomy, pressure and carbonation quality.
Water line sanitizing
Water lines, faucet and components in contact with water should be sanitized periodically, especially in professional or high-use systems.
Helpful tip:
Good sparkling water is not obtained only by increasing CO2 pressure. Water temperature, flow rate, carbonator, pressure regulator, correct installation and periodic maintenance all matter.
