Digital and mechanical flow meters: liters, filters and maintenance

Digital and mechanical flow meters for water filters: liters, flow rate and maintenance monitoring

Flow meters are used to measure or monitor the amount of water passing through a system. In water treatment installations they help monitor treated liters, schedule filter cartridge replacement and check actual system usage. Digital models are available with displays, alarms and monitoring functions, together with mechanical models with progressive reading.

What a flow meter is used for

Treated liters monitoring
A flow meter makes it possible to check the amount of water passing through the system. This is especially useful when the rated capacity of a filter cartridge is expressed in treated liters.
Filter replacement scheduling
Knowing the actual amount of treated water helps schedule maintenance according to real system usage instead of relying only on the time elapsed since installation.
System usage monitoring
Water consumption can vary significantly in offices, bars, restaurants, water dispensers, sparkling water systems, microfiltration units and professional installations. A flow meter helps monitor actual system use.

Digital flow meters

Display monitoring
Digital flow meters can display treated liters and, depending on the model, also monitor operating time, filter capacity or other information useful for maintenance.
Filter replacement alarm
Some Digiflow models use visual and acoustic alarms to indicate when the programmed filter capacity or maintenance limit has been reached.
Liters and time monitoring
The range includes models dedicated to volume monitoring and TIME-FLOW systems that can monitor both treated water volume and operating time.
Multiple filter monitoring
Some digital flow meters can monitor several filter stages. This is useful in systems where cartridges have different rated capacities or replacement intervals.

Mechanical flow meters

Progressive reading
Mechanical flow meters progressively record the volume of water passing through the meter and provide direct reading without an electronic display or battery power.
Simple and robust solution
They are suitable when the main requirement is to monitor total water consumption with a simple system that does not depend on batteries or electronic programming.
Self-locking Waterminder models
The range also includes Waterminder self-locking mechanical flow meters designed to stop water flow when the filter capacity is reached.

Digital or mechanical flow meter

Available functions
A mechanical flow meter is mainly used for progressive volume reading. A digital flow meter can provide additional functions such as LCD display, alarms, filter capacity programming, time and volume monitoring and maintenance management.
Power supply
Mechanical flow meters do not require batteries. Digital models normally use batteries to power the display, memory and alarm functions.
Application type
The choice depends on the level of monitoring required. A mechanical meter may be sufficient for simple totalization, while a digital model may be more suitable for scheduling filter replacement and receiving maintenance alerts.

What to check before choosing

System flow rate
Every flow meter must operate within its specified flow range. Before purchasing, compare the required system flow rate with the operating range of the selected meter.
Operating pressure
Always check the maximum operating pressure and make sure it is compatible with the system in which the flow meter will be installed.
Connections and size
Check thread type, connection size, any required fittings and flow direction. Incorrect installation may affect measurement or cause leaks.
Required function
Before choosing, determine whether you only need to totalize liters or also need filter capacity programming, alarms, elapsed-time monitoring or monitoring of several filter stages.

Installation and maintenance

Flow direction
The flow meter must be installed according to the water flow direction specified for the model. Incorrect positioning may prevent accurate measurement.
Programming after filter replacement
On programmable digital models, after replacing the cartridge it is important to correctly reset the capacity, time or other parameters required by the selected model.
Periodic check
Periodically check correct operation, fitting tightness, battery condition on digital models and readability of the mechanical counter or digital display.

Available flow meters

Helpful tip:
To schedule filter replacement correctly, elapsed time alone may not be enough. When cartridge capacity is expressed in treated liters, a flow meter allows maintenance to be based on the actual water consumption of the system.
