UV water systems: lamps and maintenance

UV water systems: lamps, sterilizers, spare parts and maintenance

UV water systems use ultraviolet lamps to treat water as it passes through an irradiation chamber. They are used in residential, professional, Ho.Re.Ca. and technical systems as a safety treatment and microbiological protection stage, without changing water taste, odor or mineral composition.

How a UV system works

Ultraviolet treatment
Water passes through the UV chamber and is exposed to ultraviolet light emitted by the lamp. The treatment takes place during water flow and does not add chemicals.
Stainless steel chamber
Many UV systems use a stainless steel treatment chamber designed to let water pass close to the lamp and ensure correct exposure to UV rays.
Lamp and quartz sleeve
The UV lamp is normally protected by a quartz sleeve. The sleeve allows light to pass through and separates the lamp from water, making maintenance and replacement easier.

Where UV systems are used

Drinking water
UV systems can be installed as a final treatment stage on drinking water systems, after proper filtration and when the water is clear.
Professional systems
In bars, restaurants, offices, laboratories and technical applications, a UV system can help protect the installation and improve the safety of treated water.
Treatment after filtration
To work correctly, a UV system must receive already filtered water. Turbidity, sediment and scale can reduce irradiation effectiveness.

What to check before choosing

System flow rate
The UV system must be sized according to the required flow rate. Excessive flow may reduce the exposure time of water to the lamp.
Incoming water quality
Before UV treatment, it is important to check turbidity, sediment, iron, hardness and system condition. Proper pre-filtration helps the system work better.
Available spare parts
Lamp, quartz sleeve, power supply, o-rings and accessories must be compatible with the installed model and available for periodic maintenance.

UV system maintenance

Lamp replacement
The UV lamp must be replaced according to the manufacturer's instructions, even if it still lights up. Over time, useful emission can decrease.
Quartz sleeve cleaning
The quartz sleeve should be cleaned periodically to avoid deposits, scale or dirt that may block UV light transmission.
Leak and seal check
During maintenance, check o-rings, fittings, power supply and correct closing of the UV chamber to avoid leaks or malfunction.
Helpful tip:
A UV system does not replace mechanical filtration. For good performance, it should be installed after suitable filters, the quartz sleeve should be kept clean and the lamp should be replaced on schedule.
